Wilson Promoted to Deputy Speaker

(December 5, 2007) -- Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson received a vote of confidence from all members of the Legislative Assembly today by being named a Deputy Speaker of the Legislature and Second Deputy Chair of the Committee of the Whole House.

Deputy Speakers are responsible for fulfilling the role of Speaker when he cannot be in the Chamber.  This role includes presiding over debates in the Legislative Assembly, maintaining order and decorum, ensuring the rules of parliamentary procedure are observed and protecting the privileges of all MPPs and the rights of the minority in the Chamber.  They have all of the legal and procedural authority of the Speaker when acting in his place.

“It’s a great honour to be recognized by my colleagues in this way,” said Wilson.  “It’s a great opportunity for me to work with and serve all of the members of the Legislature, regardless of their political affiliation.”

In addition, Wilson will continue to serve as the P.C. Critic for Training, Colleges and Universities.
