VIDEO: Wilson calls on government to fund Matthews House Hospice

(October 8, 2015) Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson continued his fight today to secure full funding for Matthews House Hospice in Alliston.

"Mr. Speaker, the government has promised to fund 20 new hospices. They promised this in the 2014 budget. But Matthews House still isn't funded and we're nearing the end of 2015. So Mr. Speaker, can the minister tell this house when the government will step up and fully fund Matthews House Hospice in Alliston?"

Health Minister Eric Hoskins commended Matthews House for the care it provides and responded that the government will keep its promise to fund 20 new hospices. He asked that the government be given the time to properly identify which hospices will receive funding.

Matthews House Hospice has four unfunded beds that hosted 90 patients last year, affording them a dignified death. This year it has served 41 clients so far. In addition, its community hospice service supported 487 individuals last year and to date the organization has already been there for 380 clients.

Wilson said the need for funding is clear and that the government needs to step up and do what's right.

"We all know the need for this type of facility will continue to grow," he told the minister.

Wilson noted the service that Matthews House provides takes pressure off local hospitals.

He thanked the community and the Matthews House board for its fundraising efforts to support the facility.

"The government now needs to do its part," he added.
