The 2014 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo is being held in Simcoe County
(August 29, 2014) Growing up in Alliston, I know firsthand the important role farming plays in growing Ontario’s economy and creating jobs. Agriculture is a crucial local employer in our area and the backbone of our local economy.
As MPP for Simcoe-Grey, I proudly represent small-town farming communities and understanding the issues they face has always been a top priority for me. For this reason I could not be more pleased that the Ontario Plowmen’s Association has chosen our riding to host the 2014 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo.
Recognizing 101 years of history, this annual agricultural competition is being held in the hamlet of Ivy from September 16th to 20th. The five-day event is expected to attract over 20,000 people to the area and offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to enjoy the weeklong festivities that include local food, music and educational activities for children. A full schedule of events can be found on the event website, www.plowingmatch.org.
Whether it is your first time attending the plowing match or you are an annual visitor, this event provides a great opportunity to learn about agriculture and hear directly from local farmers and agri-business leaders about where our food comes from and the problems and challenges people in the industry may face.
Agriculture affects all of us and educating ourselves about the sustainability of the industry is not only important to protect the food we eat, but also the economic value it brings to our community and province.
I’m looking forward to attending the Plowing Match again this year and invite you to do the same. Don’t forget to drop by the PC tent to help celebrate the contributions of Ontario farmers.
