VIDEO: Wilson Advocates for Fair Hospice Funding in Ontario

(April 8th, 2014) Today, Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson continued to question the McGuinty-Wynne Liberal government on the discrepancy between how hospices are funded in Ontario. Wilson is concerned that Matthews House Hospice in Alliston is not receiving its fair share of government health dollars.

“I want to begin by congratulating the staff and many volunteers of Hospice Georgian Triangle in Collingwood. I was pleased to receive notification last week that the local hospice will receive $540,000 per year in operational funding for Campbell House, a new six bed residential facility,” said Wilson. “But, Mr. Speaker, while this is good news for the Collingwood Hospice, which is in the North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN. Matthews House Hospice in Alliston, which is in the Central LHIN, is not receiving the same level of funding. In fact, Matthews House Hospice only receives $37,840 per year, a fraction of the $700,000 they spend in operational costs.”

Wilson is a strong supporter of his area’s local hospices and has been calling on the government to develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure all Ontarians receive equal access to end of life care. He questions why one LHIN is funding 21 beds when another LHIN is only funding three.

“Matthews House has been told by their LHIN that LHINs do not fund operational costs and yet Hospices in Barrie, Huntsville, Richmond Hill, Owen Sound and now Collingwood all receive operational funding from the province,” said Wilson. “This discrepancy in funding is wrong and the government needs to develop a comprehensive strategy to deal with this problem to ensure that all Ontarians receive equal access to end of life care.”

Wilson has raised this issue with the Liberal government on a number of occasions. He has not received a response. Wilson urges anyone that can to contact the Health Minister, Deb Matthews, directly to share their concern. Minister Matthews can be reached by phone: 416-327-4300 or email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
