Getting Results for April Sobisch and Owen Eisses
(Queen's Park - Jan 18/07) Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson met with Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, the Honourable Donna Cansfield, in his Alliston Constituency Office on Tuesday to discuss his Private Members Bill, The Owen Eisses Act.
The Bill calls on the government to take measures to aggressively combat motorists entering 400 series highways travelling in the wrong direction and would introduce measures to ensure that large, noticeable signs are along Ontario’s highways, alerting wrong-way drivers that they are travelling in the wrong direction and larger signs on ramps with flashing lights. Wilson’s Bill originated from one of his constituents, April Sobisch of Alliston, who told Wilson about a horrific automobile accident that she was the victim of in 2005 while travelling along Highway 400. Her car was hit head-on by a driver travelling in the wrong direction, which led her to believe that more needed to be done to combat wrong-way driving in Ontario. Ms. Sobisch was critically injured as a result of the crash, but miraculously her 1-year-old son Owen emerged unhurt.
Following the meeting with Wilson and Sobisch, Minister Cansfield agreed that more needed to be done to prevent wrong-way driving, and committed to take substantive action by the beginning of spring.
Wilson was quick to praise Sobisch for the positive attitude and personal resolve that she has displayed since the day of her accident. “April has just been so courageous throughout this whole ordeal. Not only did she accelerate her own rehabilitation to ensure that she made it home from the hospital in time for Owen’s first birthday, but then she went further and took active steps to prevent others from suffering from these types of accidents; she really is a hero,” said Wilson.
“I am just really excited that progress is being made on this issue,” said Sobisch following the commitment from the Minister. “I really appreciate everything Jim [Wilson] has done for me. He has taken me under his wing and proven to me what politics are all about. He’s just a down-to-earth guy who made my issue very personal to himself; I just appreciate everything he has done for Owen and me”
