VIDEO: MPP Wilson Pushes for New Alliston High School

April 26, 2021 - Education Minister Steven Lecce is looking forward to receiving the Simcoe County District School Board's 2021-22 Capital Priority list for new and replacement buildings. The Board is expected to finalize its top requests on Wednesday.

Responding to questions from Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson, Minister Lecce made no commitments regarding funding for a new Banting Memorial High School. But he provided assurances the government will work with the Board to understand how it can help with school improvements.

Mr. Wilson reminded Minister Lecce that Banting has been at, or near, the top of the School Board's priority list every year since at least 2015. "Banting was an old building when I attended there in the 80's," said Wilson. "Every year that this project is delayed, the costs go up."

The MPP repeated his invitation for Minister Lecce to visit Banting to see the need for a new facility. "New Tecumseth Trustee Sarah Beitz has even offered to provide hazmat suits so the Minister can 'do a behind the walls tour' to see for himself that the facility is 'caked in asbestos.'"

Wilson pointed out that 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of Frederick Banting's discovery of insulin, an appropriate time for Mr. Lecce to visit the school named for Canada's first Nobel Prize winner.
