(VIDEO): Slow Progress on Cystic Fibrosis Drugs – MPP Jim Wilson Continues Fight

September 22, 2020 – Ontario’s Health Minister provided hope, but reported little progress, as Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson continued his long-standing battle on behalf of young Cystic Fibrosis sufferers in the legislature today.

The Ontario government, along with its federal and provincial counterparts, has been negotiating with Vertex Pharmaceuticals since June on a purchasing price for the drugs Kalydeco and Orkambi.

“20 other countries have been providing Orkambi to their Cystic Fibrosis patients for years,” Wilson told the House.  “This has gone on far too long,” he said.

Citing the case of eight-year old Joshua Larocque who has returned to school in Tottenham with no access to the life-saving drug, Wilson said, “He is attending classes far more vulnerable to COVID-19 than he needs to be.”

The MPP asked Health Minister Christine Elliott, “Why, during a global pandemic, does the government continue to withhold access to Orkambi – a drug that prevents lung infections?”
