(October 16, 2017) – MPP Jim Wilson spoke about the importance of preserving prime farmland at a special event to dedicate an easement on the Morrison Family Farm near Collingwood to the Ontario Farmland Trust.

The easement agreement ensures the farm will continue to be used as prime agricultural land in the future. The dedication event was held on October 14. Pictured above are: Jo-Anne and Murray Morrison and Bernard Pope, President of the Ontario Farmland Trust.

“Protecting our best farmland for future generations is very important. I congratulate the Morrison family and the Ontario Farmland Trust for this agreement,” said Wilson.

The Morrison family has owned 217 acres near Collingwood for the past 32 years. The family grows corn, soybeans, wheat, pumpkins, squash and gourds. The farm also includes a popular roadside market. The easement covers a 175 acre parcel of the property.

The Ontario Farmland Trust has multiple easements on 12 farms in Ontario, preserving more than 1,200 acres. The Ontario Trillium Foundation has provided the Trust with a Grow Grant that pays half the costs of the easement agreements.

“I also want to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for recognizing the importance of what the Ontario Farmland Trust is doing with these easements,” said Wilson.
