VIDEO: Wilson questions the government over planning grants for local hospitals

(September 26, 2017) Today in Question Period, Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson followed up with the government to see when they will honour their commitment and approve planning grants for the Alliston and Collingwood hospitals. In June, the Liberals, NDP and Progressive Conservatives voted in favour of Wilson’s private members’ resolution asking for the immediate approval of the grants.

“Minister, as you know, on June 1st, my private members resolution was debated and received support from all three parties in this legislature,” said Wilson. “Well Minister, that was almost four months ago, and we have heard nothing since.”

Wilson went on to point out the real need for both hospital redevelopments and called on the government to at the very least be honest with his constituents. He reminded the government that at this point the hospitals are only asking for planning grants and have already spent over $1 million each of their own money to do planning so far.

We’ve been encouraged by the LHIN in both cases. We’ve been encouraged by your ministry and by yourself, and we appreciate that, but we’re in a Catch-22 now,” said Wilson. “You don’t have to approve the hundreds of millions that these things will eventually cost over 25 or 30 years. Just let them move to the next couple of stages,” he continued.

The Minister didn’t give a specific answer.

Wilson urges constituents to keep the pressure on by writing to the Premier and Health Minister and signing his petition. The Premier can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by mailing a letter to Queen’s Park, Toronto, ON M7A 1A8. You can also email Minister Hoskins at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or write to him at the same address as above. Jim's petition is available for download on his website, or in print at either of his offices.

“Politically, we should continue to do everything we can to show this Liberal government that we are united and serious about these projects,” said Wilson. “The reality remains that we need their support to get our hospitals built.
