Campaigning for our local hospitals

(May 25, 2017) As you have likely heard by now both the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston are working toward redevelopments of their respective facilities. Both hospitals have done an excellent job and I commend the management and staff alongside the community for their diligence and so far great success.

At this point both hospitals have completed Stage 1 of the approvals process.  They both have the support of their respective Local Health Integration Networks. And they are both preparing for the next stages of the five-part approvals process.

But, the fact of the matter is this: there is an elephant in the room and it is the Kathleen Wynne Government.  The reality is that until the provincial Liberal Government agrees to provide the required funding there is very little that can happen to get our hospitals built.

Politically, we are doing all the right things. There are petitions circulating in each community. If you haven’t signed one yet I urge you to stop by the hospitals or any of my office to add your name to the list. I have also written letters, raised the issue in the Ontario Legislature on many occasions, and on June 1st, I will be debating a Private Members’ Resolution that calls upon the Liberal Government to approve the planning grants.

The Resolution reads as follows:

That, in the opinion of this House, the Minister of Health should immediately approve the planning grant requested by the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital in the Town of Collingwood; and, the planning grant requested by Stevenson Memorial Hospital in the Town of New Tecumseth allowing both hospitals to proceed respectively with much needed redevelopments.

If you are still interested in joining us at Queen’s Park that day I ask that you please let the hospital or my office know.  Buses are being organized by both hospitals.

We all want to see our hospitals redeveloped as soon as possible and that is why I continue to urge everyone to flood the Liberal Government with petitions, emails and letters so that they know that our community is united and serious about these projects.  The Premier can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. Healthcare needs to be a top priority for our governments. It also needs to be equal across the province. There is a real need for both hospitals in our respective communities and I am confident that if we keep the pressure on we will be successful. Let’s not let the Kathleen Wynne Government make us wait any longer.

It’s time our hospitals are moved to the top of the province’s priority list.
