VIDEO: Saturday Marks Ontario’s second Christmas Tree Day
(December 1, 2016) Today in the legislature, Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson reminded Ontarians that this Saturday (Dec. 3) marks the second annual Christmas Tree Day in the province.
Wilson called on MPPs and all Ontarians to buy a real Christmas tree and spoke about the benefits to the environment and economy.
“Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario have a new slogan this year, ‘we are tree farmers and we take carbon out of the air’. It speaks to the organization’s mandate to bring awareness to the benefit of buying a real Christmas tree,” said Wilson.
Wilson continued to list some of the specific benefits.
“Christmas Trees are a renewable, agricultural crop … remove 13 tons of airborne pollutants per acre per year … provide a protective haven for a variety of bird and mammal species … are completely biodegradable,” listed Wilson.
Last year, Wilson's Private Member's Bill – The Christmas Tree Day Act – received Royal Assent, making Christmas Tree Day the first Saturday in December each year.
He credits the bill to Mr. Fred Somerville and Mrs. Shirley Brennan from Christmas Tree Farmers Ontario for the idea and their advocacy within the industry.
“On behalf of Christmas Tree Farmers Ontario, I encourage all Ontarians to buy a real tree this holiday season and help support an important industry in Ontario,” concluded Wilson.
