MPP Wilson raises local concerns about skyrocketing electricity rates
(November 21, 2016) On Thursday, November 17, during Question Period, Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson pressed the Kathleen Wynne Liberal government to explain why it's allowing skyrocketing electricity rates to burden Ontarians.
Wilson shared with Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault a story involving a constituent from Simcoe-Grey, Mrs. Karen Rucas, who wrote Wilson to express her frustration over her hydro bill.
"Let me just summarize her bill for you," Wilson told the energy minister. "Hydro usage: $179.58. Total cost of her bill: $512.20. Mrs. Rucas explains that of the whopping $512 total cost of her bill, $309 of it is government fees. Mr. Speaker, that's 60 percent of her bill in fees alone. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Rucas would like to know: Will residents of Ontario be reimbursed for what she and many people call outrageous overcharges?"
But instead of giving Wilson an answer, the Energy Minister responded with information about already announced government programs aimed at helping Ontarians struggling to pay their electricity bills.
Wilson then shared another story from a constituent, Mr. Richard Wiles of Collingwood, but again the minister didn't provide a direct answer.
