Wynne Liberals continue on destructive path
(November 15, 2016) Monday afternoon the Kathleen Wynne Liberals presented Ontario with a fall economic statement.
They would like Ontarians to believe that all is well in our province but we know that's not the case.
Thanks to the Liberals' waste, scandal and mismanagement, Ontario has never been in worse shape in its history.
What exacerbates the situation is the Liberals simply don't seem to care about the struggles people are dealing with on a day-to-day basis.
They have offered no meaningful help for families and businesses struggling to pay their electricity bills. And rates keep going up. As winter settles in, you can bet those electricity costs are only going to become more burdensome.
Meanwhile, the province's finances continue to be mishandled by the Liberals. This is a government that spends far more time on dealing with its scandals and image than it does dealing with financial problems that continue to grow worse by the day.
Ontario will continue to be the largest sub-national borrower in the world.
Sadly, the Wynne Liberals have no real credible plan to balance the budget. We already know there's a trust deficit in the Wynne government. Now we know there's a financial deficit, too.
It's clear the only way the Liberals will be able to balance the budget is through higher taxes, more fire sales, and cuts to health care and social services.
The Financial Accountability Officer's report, released last week, provided some interesting insight into the labour market and job projections in Ontario.
For example, the FAO stated "growth in business investment has been disappearing over the past four years. If business investment continues to under perform, export gains would be more limited than expected, holding back overall growth."
The FAO also stated that unemployment in Ontario now stretches on longer than in past years, reporting the average duration of unemployment has grown to 20 weeks from a 2007 level of 15 weeks.
Furthermore, the FAO stated that 20 percent of those who are unemployed remain that way for six months or longer, compared to 13 percent in 2007.
I could go on but you get the point.
This Liberal government is living in a fairytale land. It has never been more evident than Monday afternoon when Finance Minister Charles Sousa delivered his so-called fall economic statement in the legislature.
The facts remain: Ontario is in a dire fiscal state and life remains unaffordable under the government.
Ontario's financial position will only continue to deteriorate under the Wynne Liberal government.
I encourage you to write Premier Wynne directly and demand that she stop dithering and take action on important matters such as skyrocketing electricity rates and sloppy fiscal management. Her hand-wringing is only making things worse now and down the road for all Ontarians.
You can write the premier at: The Honourable Kathleen O. Wynne, Main Legislative Building, Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario, M7A 1A1.
In the meantime, I will keep working hard on your behalf, lobbying the government to get its act together.
