Foreign Students Win While Ontario Students Get Left Behind

(November 4, 2010) Dalton McGuinty has clearly lost touch with the priorities of Ontario families says the Ontario PC Critic for Colleges and Universities.  Jim Wilson (Simcoe-Grey) made the comments after learning that the McGuinty Government is spending $30 million to put students from other countries through university.

“Why is the Premier using tuition dollars from Ontario students, and tax dollars from Ontario families, to put people who don’t even live in this province through university,” asked Wilson in Question Period.

While in Hong Kong yesterday, McGuinty announced the Ontario Trillium Scholarship that will provide 75 students from other countries with $40,000 annually to study at an Ontario university.  The total international student program announced yesterday by the Premier will cost Ontario students and families $30 million.

“Dalton McGuinty clearly doesn’t understand the world Ontario families live in anymore,” said Wilson.  “While Ontario families struggle to pay for school, electricity, auto insurance and sales tax hikes, the McGuinty Government is focussed on paying the tuition of students who don’t even live in this country, let alone this province.”

Wilson is demanding that the government scrap the program and redirect the funds to Ontario students.
